Jazz has a strong history and legacy in our region.
The story of the Atkins High School band and choral
programs under the direction of the legendary Harry
Wheeler is a significant one, as is the story of the
influential Bernard Foy.

Local music educators Bernard Foy & Harry Wheeler performed with national big bands on tour here in the '40s & '50s.
The love for jazz these two men instilled in many of the region's young musicians appears to have seen them through some lean years to a more recent time when the genre is finding renewed popularity. Jazz is performed in outdoor summer series throughout the region, and the jazz club scene seems to be enjoying a revival.
