Forsyth County's largest city of Winston-Salem is known as the "City of the Arts." The city and county have a distinguished and unique arts heritage. Forsyth County is home to the nation's first arts council, as well as the first publically-funded high school and college for the performing arts, the North Carolina School of the Arts, whose graduates include some of the country's finest musicians, actors, and dancers. Forsyth County is also home to outstanding heritage musicians. Jazz, blues, bluegrass, gospel, Moravian, and old-time stringband music are performed every day of the year in a variety of settings, including music clubs, parks, historic sites, restaurants, and downtown streets.
