Description of Event: The
family-friendly jam sessions, highlighted in Bluegrass Unlimited in 2000, feature acoustic bluegrass,
old-time, gospel, and country music and dancing (no taps please). Folks, sometimes up to 200 of them,
come out to socialize, dance, and experience or play music. Multiple groups play in the three
rooms of the building. In the
summer, there are up to seven or eight groups playing inside and out. The event welcomes beginners to
advanced players and includes all ages.
Newcomers are welcome.
Drinks and snacks are available for sale. No alcohol; indoors is non-smoking.
History of Site/Event: In 1990, local residents Paul and Thelma Jurney started the jam sessions. Though now
sponsored by the local Ruritan Club, the Jurneys are usaully still
there on Friday nights.
Description of Site/Facility: The building, an old schoolhouse constructed
around 1915, has high ceilings and excellent hardwood floors for
dancing. When the weather allows,
the music and dancing spread out onto the large lawn shaded by 100-year
old oak trees. There is a nearby
Amish community, and a horse and buggy is a typical site along the
road.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community: This family-oriented jam offers locals, as
well as visitors, the opportunity to play and enjoy fine acoustic
music. The event gives musicians
a chance to play their instruments in an informal community setting and
allows people of all ages to socialize and learn from each other.
