Description of Event: Each
Thursday evening, veteran musicians and younger musicians alike
congregate at the ground floor of the Andy Griffith Playhouse for a
community jam session. Regular
listeners, as well as first-time visitors, come to enjoy the music and/or
dance. Sometimes folks will also
spontaneously gather outside and jam in the courtyard or parking
area. Snacks are available from
vending machines.
History of Site/Event: The Surry County Arts Council began this
event in 1994 and has run it ever since. The Arts Council is located in the
Andy Griffith Playhouse.
Description of Site/Facility: The Andy Griffith Playhouse is an attractive,
accessible brick complex near the center of downtown.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community: The event offers local veteran musicians, as
well as younger musicians, to meet weekly and enjoy jamming and
learning from each other. It
also provides an opportunity for listeners and dancers, both locals and
visitors, to experience high-quality stringband
music every week in an easily accessible setting.
