Description of Event: Every Tuesday night, the
Senior Room at the Armfield Civic Center is filled with the
upbeat sounds of stringed instruments, thanks to the energy and
enthusiasm of area musicians and spectators. The musicians,
mostly bluegrass, come from Surry and neighboring counties.
Musicians range from teenagers to seniors of all ability
levels, and many are regulars. Younger and less experienced
musicians learn from more seasoned players. The event is
family-friendly. Spectators sit on folding chairs provided and
can clap, stomp, and join in the fun. Light refreshments are
available. A popular feature of the jam is the 50/50
fundraiser, in which tickets are sold for $1, the money is
pooled, and the winner gets half.
History of Site/Event: The jam started in 1998
at the request of local musicians.
Description of Site/Facility: Encompassed in
the Armfield Civic & Recreation Center is the Pilot Mountain
Senior Center, whose mission is to provide encouragement to
seniors and enrich their lifestyles through social events,
nutrition, and exercise. The Civic Center is an attractive
modern facility in a bucolic setting with an aquatic complex,
fitness center, gym, and a nature park.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
The Civic & Recreation Center is a cornerstone of
intergenerational community life in and around Pilot Mountain.
It is important to the physical and mental health of area
residents and the economic health of the area. The Tuesday
night jam sessions at the Senior Center, which is part of the
Civic Center, enrich the life of the complex, while offering the
musicians and spectators who participate in the jam an ongoing
opportunity for music making and fellowship.
