Description of Event: Each year, “Mayberry” fans from across the nation and as far away as Australia flock to Andy Griffith’s birthplace of Mount Airy, the town believed to have inspired ”Mayberry” on the famed TV show.  This fun-filled, over-the-top, three-day extravaganza includes bluegrass and country music concerts during the day and evening on Friday and Saturday.   Saturday morning features the Mayberry Days Parade, the Mayberry Days Revue, and the Barbecue Cook-off & Barbecue Sale.  Other regular events are the Mayberry Trivia Contest, Mrs. Wiley's Tea, and free walking tours.  Some festival attendees dress up as their favorite character on The Andy Griffith Show, and these Mayberry look-alikes fit right into the atmosphere of this one-of-a-kind event.

History of Site/Event: The Surry Arts Council started Mayberry Days in 1990.  It has been popular ever since.

Description of Site/Facility:   Historic downtown Mt. Airy typifies small town America as exemplified by native son’s Andy Griffith’s TV show.  The “Mayberry” theme is evident in various shops and restaurants along the town’s charming Main Street.

Significance of Site/Event to the Community: Mayberry Days, named three times as a "Southeast Tourism Society's Top 20 Event", is a source of pride and revenue for Mount Airy.  The event helps reinforce the “Mayberry” experience that Mt. Airy offers visitors and residents year-round.
