Description of Event: Main Street
in downtown Pilot Mountain is closed off for arts & crafts
vendors, who come from around North
Carolina and other states to sell their
work. There is a music stage,
with a mostly bluegrass performed by regional groups during the day
Saturday, as well as either bluegrass or gospel on Sunday. Friday and Saturday evening is rock
& roll. There is also an
extensive food court on a nearby side street, as well as games and
rides for kids in the adjacent parking lot. The classic car show starts before
official opening time on Saturday, with cars rolling in as early as
8:30am. On Sunday morning,
tractors roll in for the antique tractor show as early as 10:00am.
History of Site/Event: The Pilot Mountain Civic Club began MayFest in 1983 to raise money for local charities
and it has been going strong ever since.
Description of Site/Facility: Several streets are closed in downtown Pilot Mountain
for the festival. Pilot Mountain,
population 1200, has a charming downtown undergoing a revitalization
that includes a number of antique shops and new restaurants. Located near the base of the mountain
which the town is named after, Pilot
Mountain sits between Winston-Salem and Mount Airy.
Significance of Site/Event to the
Community: In addition to raising money for local charities, MayFest gives an opportunity for families to spend
time together on Mother’s Day weekend. It brings people downtown for fun and
fellowship and shows folks from out of town what Pilot Mountain
has to offer.
