Description of Event:
At the Celebration, agriculture lovers of all ages come out to play
in the hay maze and milk Bessie the Cow. The day includes bread and
ice cream making contests, and fruit and vegetable decorating. Local
politicians even participate in a cow milking contest.
Essay contest submissions, on topics
such as, “I remember when…” and “What agriculture means to me…” are
posted all around the amphitheater. While musical groups like the
Marshall Brothers and Highroad serenade fairgoers with bluegrass,
country, and gospel music, local 4H groups sell drinks and hot dogs,
and the Cattlemen’s Association sells hamburgers.
History of Site/Event:
In 2006, Surry County replaced its county fair with Agricultural
Celebration Day. The day focuses on education and displaying the
talents of county residents.
Description of Site/Facility:
The amphitheater is in the middle
of Fisher River Park. Visitors can bring their own lawn chairs to
sit and enjoy music.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
Agricultural Celebration Day is a place for people who don’t
normally have the opportunity to learn about agriculture. It is a
celebration of the county’s agricultural accomplishments.
