Description of Event: Jane Priddy Charleville describes this event as
“bluegrass music at its finest,
Stokes
County
hospitality at its finest.” “It’s
like family reunion,” explains Priddy Charleville. “What
we’re all about is making everyone feel part of the store family.” People
come from
Stokes
County
, surrounding counties and as far away as
Raleigh
to hear high-quality bluegrass bands. There’s
a different band each week and have included such area favorites as the Dan
River Boys, Snow Creek Old Time Band, Wood & Steel, and the Muddy Creek
Bluegrass Band. All ages enjoy the
music in this old-fashioned family atmosphere with a dance floor for clogging. A
tasty black-pot special is available each week for a small donation.
Fare could be pinto beans one week, or chicken stew or chili the next.
Drinks are available for sale in the store.
There’s a ½ hour break in the middle of the music for an old time
auction with such country items as homemade canned goods, apple butter, and
molasses. Proceeds go to a needy
family at Christmas.
History of Site/Event: The event began in 2002 when Jane Priddy
Charleville noticed a regular customer, Stokes county old-timer Moyer Woods,
sitting in his car outside the store listening to bluegrass music on WPAQ radio
out of
Mt.
Airy
. Inspired to bring more live music
events to
Stokes
County
, she worked with a friend to make “Pickin'
at Priddy’s” a reality.
Description of Site/Facility: Priddy’s General Store looks like John Boy from
the Waltons will bump into you near the hoop cheese.
Covered a number of times in “Our State” magazine, the 117-year-old
country store, the pasture behind it where the music takes place, and the
farmhouse have been in Priddy’s family since 1929.
Before that, the property was built, owned and operated by the Hartman
family from 1888-1929.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
This event is talked about year-round in
Stokes
County
, and locals and visitors look forward it.
According to Priddy Charleville, “It allows folks to come together and
enjoy one another in an atmosphere of years past.”
