Description of Event:  The music at Speakeasy Jazz features the area’s finest jazz and blues performers, as well as high-quality groups touring the area, often from New York.  There is a full bar, and light snacks are available.  Thursday through Saturday features a mix of regional and touring talent, depending on who’s scheduled for the evening.  Every Wednesday is an open night jazz jam hosted by some of the area’s top jazz musicians.  Whoever wishes to perform signs up at the door between 8:00pm and 10:30pm.  On Mondays and Tuesdays, music is provided by CDs.

History of Site/Event:  Speakeasy Jazz opened in October 2002.  The two proprietors, former computer professionals who had recently moved back to Winston-Salem from Silicon Valley, worked to create a sophisticated, friendly, and inclusive atmosphere for folks to enjoy good music and a wide selection of alcoholic beverages.  The reception by locals and visitors has been positive.

Description of Site/Facility:  The club occupies the ground floor of a renovated historic building in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem.  The look is sleek and urban chic and includes glass and chrome, as well as exposed brick, which adds warmth.  There is a raised stage at the front, tables near the stage, a large handsome bar stretching the depth of the club, and some more tables in the back.  In the warmer months, the club has outdoor café-style seating on the sidewalk, as do other establishments on the block, creating a social, pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

Significance of Site/Event to the Community:  Speakeasy Jazz draws a diverse crowd and provides a welcoming place for area residents and tourists to enjoy fine music in an urbane, attractive ambiance.  The club’s success is aiding revitalization efforts in Winston-Salem’s downtown core.
