Description
of Event:
At this celebration of heritage, festival
goers can enjoy
ribs, chicken, fish, and ethnic dishes. Some seating is
provided for musical events, but visitors may also want
to bring their own chairs. Musicians perform R&B, Jazz,
Gospel, Reggae, and Rap music. Music includes jazz by
local favorites Galvin Crisp and Herb Stephens, blues by
Ron Hunter, as well gospel choirs and drummers. Vendors
sell an array of ethnic products, from African attire
and jewelry to shea butter, artwork, etc. There is also
storytelling, the Health and Wellness Village, a
basketball tournament, and a children’s area.
History of
Site/Event: Cheryl Harry
started Winston-Salem’s Juneteenth event in 2005. A
kick-off is held in May in Old Salem on the day (or
around the date) that the slaves in Winston-Salem were
freed in 1865. In June, a three day celebration is held
that includes an art exhibition, roundtable dialogue and
the festival.
Description
of Site/Facility: The
festival is held at Rupert Bell Park in the heart of
East Winston. It’s an attractive setting with green
grass, trees, and a basketball court.
Significance
of Site/Event to the Community:
Juneteenth is the
country's oldest-known celebration of the abolition of
slavery. The holiday began in Texas in 1865. Juneteenth
participants celebrate and recognize African-Americans
who survived the inhumane and cruel institution of
slavery. In addition, celebrants pay homage to
ancestors who kept safe African language, songs and
customs.
