Description of Event: Bluegrass,
Celtic, and traditional and contemporary folk music
is performed by both national and local performers.
The level of musicianship is very high. The grounds
of Reynolda House provide a mellow setting for a gentle
afternoon festival of music and song. People stretch
out in lawn chairs, on quilts and blankets to picnic
and listen. Food and regional craft vendors circle
the music area.
History of Event: Fiddle & Bow's
FolkFest began in 1991. The Fiddle & Bow Society,
founded in 1981, is a nonprofit, all-volunteer educational
organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation
of folk music and dance and their related arts. Fiddle
& Bow brings fine national and international musicians
to the Triad and supports the local music scene and
performers. The incredibly active volunteer organization
sponsors frequent concerts and organizes or co-sponsors
numerous festivals and other events showcasing traditional
music.
Description/History of Site: Folkfest
takes place on the lawn of Reynolda House, among formal
gardens and under the tall shade trees. Completed
in 1917, Reynolda House is the elegant former home
of Katherine Smith and Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder
of the tobacco manufacturing company.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
This festival has a long track record of
solid attendance and is appreciated by the community.
