Description of Event: One of the
first things the new settlers did on arriving in the
Piedmont was to plant apple orchards. The First Annual
Apple Festival began, too, with the dedication of
an apple tree. Then the music kicked in, excellent
bluegrass and old-time bands. The event has plenty
of space for blankets and lawn chairs, as well as
for children to run around. Vendors selling food and
regional craft and living history demonstrations with
costumed interpreters add to the lively and authentic
atmosphere.
Description/History of Site: Historic Bethabara
, a national historic landmark, was founded in 1753.
Today the site is a beautiful, wooded 175-acre wildlife
preserve, with 126 kinds of birds, walking trails,
a museum, restored 1788 church, reconstructed village,
French and Indian War fort, and colonial and medical
gardens. It is a perfect festival setting with a kind
of natural amphitheater within the walls of the fort.
History of Event: The Apple Festival
began in September of 2001 with the help of the Fiddle
& Bow Society.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
The festival highlights the areas agricultural, musical
and craft heritage. The Apple Festival came into being
as a result of the success of the May 2001 Celtic
Festival at the Park.
