July Sunset Sounds at the Gazebo on Main
Street in Downtown Thomasville
Date: Thursdays in July, 7:00pm—9:00pm.
Type: Weekly concert series, featuring
a mix of musical genres, including jazz, blues, bluegrass,
brass band, and folk, presented in the downtown square
along Main Street.
Location: The Gazebo is located on
Main Street in downtown Thomasville. It is behind
the Big Chair, an area attraction, and near the Thomasville
Visitors Center, which is in an old railroad car at
44 West Main Street. Click

Cost: Free.
Parking: Free parking is available
along the street and in the parking lot of the Visitors
Center. Parking adequate for bus tours.
Special Needs Access: Venue is fully accessible.
It is easier for people in wheelchairs to access
the site from the Visitors Center parking lot.
Signage: Signs at location, but not
en route.

Description of Event: People of all ages
turn out to enjoy a mix of musical genres that usually
features regional musicians. Every year the series
is different, though the primary focus is on jazz,
including blues, with some string band and bluegrass
mixed in. Concert goers spread out and quickly to
fill the lawn area around the Gazebo, which serves
as the stage for the Sunset Sounds. There is room
for children to play and people of all ages to dance.
Food is available for purchase.
History of Site/Event: Arts United
for Davidson County and PACE, a downtown Thomasville
development group, began the July concerts during
the summer of 1999. Arts United now sponsors and coordinates
the concerts.
Description of Site/Facility: Built
in 1983, the Gazebo is a reconstructed bandstand in
small park-like setting in downtown Thomasville. It
is situated behind the Big Chair in a small lawn space
along Main Street.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
The nostalgic, park-like setting combined with the
nearby historic references of the railroad and the
Big Chair creates a relaxed atmosphere for a community
summer concert series.
