Description of Event: On Tuesday
nights, Roy Sowers and his Thomasville Bluegrass Band
are at Roy's Music Company playing some of the region's
best bluegrass and gospel for the people who gather
to listen and sing along. On Saturdays, the shop is
jamming, and Roy alternates between selling and joining
in on his banjo. People come and go, but many of the
area's best pickers are likely to be there at some
point on Saturday for the jam.
History of Site/Event: Sometime in
the 1970s, Roy and three of his friends started getting
together regularly to play bluegrass music sitting
on some old cross-ties in his yard. He built a 12'
x 12' building for the sessions, put in a wood-stove,
and more people began to show up. He's been playing
his banjo with many of them for decades now.
Description of Site/Facility: Roy's
Music Company is a small, separate building behind
his home where people come to purchase instruments,
hear fiery bluegrass, and jam.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
Roy's Music Company is a place folks
like to be, especially on Tuesday nights and Saturday
mornings. He describes it as "friendly…
a place where people can laugh and cut up, sing along.
One guy comes who can get the whole place singing."
Roy promotes this low-key, fun atmosphere, and it
attracts people from all around.
