Description of Event: The Nunn Brothers Band
is the host band for this four-day bluegrass and gospel festival. Arnold
and Alden Nunn, twin brothers who learned to play music from their
father, have played in bands since they were teenagers. The festival
features regional acts from North Carolina and Virginia. Gospel music is
featured on Sunday. There are crafts, clothes, and food and drinks for
sale by local vendors.
History of Site/Event: The Westfield
Fiddlers Convention used to be held at the old schoolhouse in Westfield,
a community near Mount Airy in Surry County, NC. The Convention was
discontinued and the schoolhouse torn down around the same time that the
federal government introduced strict regulations on tobacco. Arnold and
Alden Nunn decided the time was right to begin their own festival on
their farm nearby. The Nunns had often held large musical gatherings at
their farm, and in 1998 they held the first Nunn Brothers Bluegrass
Festival.
Description of Site/Facility: The festival
is on the site of a former tobacco farm. Audience members bring chairs
and blankets and sit in a field surrounded by a crystal clear creek.
Performers play on a stage in front of an old tobacco barn in a
beautiful setting. Some people camp on the property during the weekend.
There are no hook ups. It's basic camping with no running water or
electricity, and most campers bring campers with generators or tents.
Significance of Site/Event to the Community:
Since the Westfield Fiddlers Convention was discontinued, the Nunn
Brothers Festival has given people from the local community and beyond
an event to look forward to. People come from all over to enjoy
authentic music in a relaxing atmosphere.
