described by musicologist Alan Lomax as "folk music with overdrive", bluegrass is a regional treasure very much at home here.

The banjo, originating in Africa, was made famous in bluegrass music by North Carolinian Earl Scruggs.
Perhaps it is so familiar that the high caliber of musicianship found among the region's bluegrass musicians is sometimes taken for granted. Some of the most acclaimed players on the national scene are natives. In the more rural counties of Yadkin, Surry, Stokes, Davie, and Davidson, life is steeped in the genre. Helping create a lively bluegrass scene in the region are bluegrass festivals and conventions, as well as bluegrass jams and dances in barns, restaurants, community centers, and music stores.

To understand how our region's bluegrass scene fits into the bigger picture, you can go to www.ibma.org/about.bluegrass/history/index.asp for information on the development of bluegrass in the United States.
